Assignment for The Chronicle of Higher Education

I did a portrait assignment here in Bucharest recently for The Chronicle of Higher Education back in the US. I spent some time with Zoe Petre, a professor of Ancient History at The University of Bucharest. You can read the story about how academia has changed in Eastern Europe in the past 20 years here.

This Day of Change Tearsheets

In January I had the privilege of participating in a group project titled 'This Day of Change' organized by the magazine Courrier Japon which sent 132 photographers from around the world out to capture life on Barack Obama’s inauguration day. Both Japanese (pictured above) and English language versions of the book have been published. Check out the website devoted to the project here and my page on the site. The Japanese version can be purchased from Amazon Japan and the English version from Amazon.com. The book was recently nominated for a Lucie Award.

'This Day of Change' Assignment

In January I had the privilege of participating in a group assignment organized by Courrier Japon that sent 132 photographers from around the world out to capture life on Barack Obama's inauguration day. Two of my images are now online with more soon to follow and a book with everyone's work is due to be published on 25 April. An English companion version will be published later in May. There is a simultaneous exhibition in Japan with about 50 photographs from the book and one of them happens to be mine. The location is the pedestrian deck at Shinjuku's Takashimaya Department Store's second floor. Access: Shinjuku station, 2 minutes from Shin-Minamiguchi exit. On assignment for the NGO Ovidiu Rom outside Bucharest

Today I was privileged to tag along in the field with the charming Nadia and Dana from Leslie Hawke's (the American actor Ethan's mother) NGO called Ovidiu Rom which seeks to help put impoverished Romanian children in school. We drove outside Bucharest to the small village of Vizuresti and spent the day teaching kindergarteners as well as knocking on doors and speaking with parents in the hopes of getting their children to come to school. Leslie came to Romania first in 2000 with the Peace Corps and then started Ovidiu Rom in 2001. She is doing humanitarian work of the first order. It was truly a joy to participate. Contract to photograph for the American Chamber of Commerce in Bucharest

The assignment went well yesterday on the streets of Bucharest even if the paranoia of Communism still lingers. Today, I met with the American-Romanian Chamber of Commerce and have negotiated a deal to photograph their occasional events.

The IHT called about an assignment in Bulgaria in a few days, but I'm still in the US until after the election. It's always a bummer to turn down an assignment.

Almost on assignment for La Stampa!

I would have loved to have photographed Italian tourists vacationing on the Black Sea in Romania for the Italian newspaper La Stampa, but, alas, I was in the US when they called. Young Romanians have been leaving in droves to work in Italy and now Italians are going to Romania for some sun?! I love this! Europe really is in a new era.
